The Legend of Gonzalo
Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba was more than just a soldier; he was the herald of the gunpowder age.
The Reconquista: He first made his mark in 1492 during the War of Granada, where his strategic use of siege engines brought a triumphant end to the campaign.
A Military Revolution: Recognizing that warfare was changing, he transformed Spain’s military. In the Second Italian War, he faced the legendary French heavy cavalry. Instead of a standard head-on clash, he combined arquebusiers, pikemen, and light horse into the prototype Spanish Tercio.
Legacy: This victory shattered the myth of the “invincible knight” and marked history’s first major triumph won primarily with firearms.

📊 Head-to-Head: Gonzalo vs. Cook vs. Artemisia I
Abbreviations:
RA: Ranged Troop Attack
RD: Ranged Troop Defense
RHP: Ranged Troop HP
Based on the above abbreviations, we have recorded the key attributes of the three recent archer generals in the table below. Buffs that require specific use cases (such as attacking, in-rally, and reinforcing) are also marked.
The table shows the degree of improvement within each dimension, helping compare the overall strength of the three generals.
In comparison, as a main general, Gonzalo is slightly weaker than Artemisia I in terms of attack, defense, HP, and march size when considering pure offensive buffs. However, most of his buffs are unrestricted, making them effective not only in attacks but also across multiple scenarios such as reinforcement, rally, and defense.
His application scope is similar to that of James Cook, but as a main general, Gonzalo’s max-level special skills and specialty stats surpass Cook’s. Moreover, when serving as an assistant general, although his boost to ranged troop defense is comparatively lower, his attack and HP bonuses for ranged troops remain the highest to date.
Therefore, Gonzalo is best suited as an assistant general for 1st- and 2nd-tier ranged troops, or as a main general for 3rd-tier and reinforcement ranged troops.
Best General Combinations & Skill Books
The following four combinations are our most recommended.
In addition, many generals can be combined with Gonzalo, such as:
Franz Joseph I
Algernon Sidney
Ragnar
Tachibana Ginchiyo
Marcus Agrippa
Louis IX
Mihai
Douglas
Charles XII
Edward III
On the other hand, some generals are not suitable to be paired with him, for example:
Sigurd
Godfrey of Bouillon
Eleanor
Recommended Skill Books
Skill books are also a factor to consider when pairing generals. We suggest that the main general and assistant general of archer troops use the following types of skill books:
Ranged Troop Range Bonus
Ranged Troop HP
Ranged Troop Defense
March Size
Ranged Troop Attack
Luck
In addition, the chance of obtaining Gonzalo from this token is lower than that of the other two, so we do not recommend this method.
